The Guild of the Austin Lyric Opera invites you to spend an evening in Puccini’s world, a time when exploration of other cultures fascinated writers, poets, and musicians and when one determined person could change elements of his society for the better. The waltz as a dance form was coming into its own, opera had never been more beautiful or appealing to the masses, and people wanted to connect with each other by addressing social issues and relationships. It was heady stuff!
The 2008 Opera Ball is chaired by Suzanne Shore and Lidia Agraz. It will be held on February 23 at the Four Seasons and will touch on these elements. When you enter, you will hear strings playing a waltz, and a dance floor that beckons you to twirl in your best ball gown or tuxedo. Or you might enjoy a stroll on the patio overlooking the river while sipping your favorite wine…close your eyes, it might be Vienna! When the doors open for dinner, you will be dazzled by exquisite floral arrangements and enchanted with a Puccini aria sung by one of our talented artists. During a celebratory five course dinner prepared by chef Elmar Prambs, there will be more entertainment surprises. You’ll have time to participate in an exciting live auction, and then we honor James Armstrong.
BRAVISSIMO GIACOMO! Translates as WELL DONE, JAMES! This special event is being created to celebrate the impact James Armstrong has made in Austin and beyond. The breadth and scope of his generosity will amaze you! He will not only be recognized, but also thanked for his involvement with Austin Lyric Opera and for the creation of the Armstrong Community Music School, the only music school of its kind in the country. The school provides scholarships for those who wish to study music, instruction for infants up to adults, live opera performances for school children, opportunities for the mentally and visually impaired and for challenged youth. Music transcends language, inspires, and encourages participation.
The Opera Ball is the Guild’s major annual fundraiser. Proceeds benefit Austin Lyric Opera and Armstrong Community Music School, and will be presented by the Guild to these organizations in James Armstrong’s name. We invite you to be a part of this memorable night!
