Welcome to the World of Opera!
Austin Lyric Opera is more that just our main stage productions. ALO is a cultural destination for the community that delivers world-class opera performances; engages audiences in creative environments from community groups to fantastic special events; enables lifelong learning; and celebrates the diversity that makes Austin unique. From fostering the next generation of opera enthusiasts to strengthening the relationship with current ones, we are committed to fostering a deeper connection with opera and the arts.
Opera by Night participation is bolstered by partnerships with a growing list of schools and community organizations that includes:
- Texas School for the Deaf
- Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired
- East Austin (AISD) and Round Rock ISD
- American Youth Works
- Austin Shelter for Women and Children
- Boys and Girls Clubs of Austin
- Lifeworks
Opera by Night is made possible by the generous support of BlueCross BlueShield of Texas.
The Pagliacci Project was a new collaboration between Austin Lyric Opera and the Butler Opera Center at the University of Texas that provided live performances of Act II from Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci in various public venues around Austin. Performed in English, with minimal sets and costumes, this project provided graduate voice students with performance experience while bringing the art form to the community. The Pagliacci Project appeared at popular public venues such as clubs, shopping malls and outdoor street festivals and raised public awareness for Austin Lyric Opera’s fully-staged production of Pagliacci in the fall of 2012. All performances were free to the general public.
Approximately 8 students earned college credit for their participation in The Pagliacci Project. The roll of Canio was portrayed by Jason Baldwin, an established operatic tenor, thus creating synergy between today’s experienced performers and the artists of tomorrow.

The Pagliacci Project was made possible in part by the generous support of Sandra and Walter Wilke, and The Arts Education League of Austin Lyric Opera.
Opera Treasure Chest is a free program that includes 10 carefully designed, TEKS-aligned interactive lesson plans culminating in a live opera performance for students in grades K-4. Each lesson comes with all of the materials teachers needto help students experience opera through a variety of classroom subjects. Teachers at participating schools “check out” treasure chests full of opera-related materials— CDs, DVDs, books and games —that enliven class time and introduce classical music concepts that benefit writing, critical thinking and other skills. The Opera Treasure Chest follows two major paths. The first is a comprehensive look at opera: the “who, what, where, when and why”. The second concentrates on a specific opera from ALO’s current season.
Opera Overtures encourages people to arrive at The Long Center early, grab a drink and make the most of their evening at the opera!
