Verdi’s Don Carlo, Puccini’s Tosca, and Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love

AUSTIN—Austin Lyric Opera (ALO) is pleased to announce its 2013-14 Season, which will include the company premiere of two operatic masterpieces, and the presentation of one perennial favorite. The season opens this November with Don Carlo, Verdi’s epic tale of unrequited love and strained family allegiances. ALO will be offering Don Carlo for the first time in the company’s history, in celebration of the bicentennial of Verdi’s birth. The season continues in January and February 2014 with Tosca, Puccini’s volatile drama, returning to the Austin stage for the first time since 2004. The charming and romantic The Elixir of Love brings the season to a close in May 2014, and is another ALO first.

The 2013-14 Season marks an important milestone in the company’s history: Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Richard Buckley’s 10th Anniversary with ALO. Known for his dynamic contributions in both the operatic and orchestral genres, Maestro Buckley has delivered a level of artistry that has elevated ALO’s reputation in the United States and beyond. He has brought a range of audience favorites and critically-acclaimed productions to ALO during his tenure, consistently ensuring the highest musical standards. Maestro Buckley will conduct all three productions in the upcoming season.

“Our 2013-14 Season is exciting on several levels. Not only are we continuing our efforts to present epic masterworks from the repertoire, but we have an opportunity at the same time to make important company premieres with Don Carlo and The Elixir of Love,” says General Director, Joseph Specter. “It’s a terrific season that I think Austin audiences will really enjoy, and a fitting celebration of Richard’s 10th year with ALO.”

“We open our season with Verdi’s Don Carlo, one of ALO’s most ambitious and large-scale productions,” says Maestro Richard Buckley. “We continue with Puccini’s explosive drama, Tosca, and end with The Elixir of Love, Donizetti’s famous comic gem. All three pieces represent the great Italian tradition of which I have been associated with all my career.”

2013-14 SEASON

Verdi’s Don Carlo

November 16, 21, 24, 2013

Politics, love and family loyalties are tested in this epic battle of wills involving a tyrannical king, a despairing prince and an innocent young woman. Verdi’s tour-de-force tells the tale of powerful people who must accept their role as pawns in a tragic destiny.

Puccini’s Tosca

January 30, February 1, 2, 2014

A captivating diva becomes entangled in a dangerous struggle between her rebellious lover and a scheming police chief, whose desire to have her reaches a deadly climax. Set against the turbulent political backdrop of Napoleonic Rome, Tosca features some of Puccini’s most passionate music in one of opera’s most explosive and best-loved dramas.

Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love

May 1, 3, 4, 2014

Mischievous charlatans, misguided affections and “magic” potions intoxicate and entice in this delightful story of a simple peasant who has fallen in love with the town beauty. Filled with twists, turns and romantic mix-ups, Donizetti’s masterpiece is a beguiling combination of romance and comedy. This wildly popular and enchanting work is another first for Austin Lyric Opera.

The Pagliacci Project Cultivates the Next Generation of Opera Talent with Unique Performance Experiences in Unexpected Locations for All Austinites to Enjoy

AUSTIN— The Pagliacci Project is an exciting new collaboration between Austin Lyric Opera (ALO) and the Butler Opera Center at the University of Texas (BOC). This partnership will culminate in numerous live performances of Act II from Leoncavallo’s renowned opera, Pagliacci, in public venues in and around Austin, reaching audiences and communities new to opera. Performed in English, with updated sets and costumes, The Pagliacci Project will take place in a variety of highly-visible locations, such as outdoor street festivals, shopping malls, and clubs. Performances are free to the public. For more information, visit www.AustinLyricOpera.org.

“This is a wonderful chance for us to give back to the community and share opera with a broad audience—in places they would least expect—at no cost. For many, it will be their first experience with the art form.” says ALO General Director, Joseph Specter. “We are thrilled to be able to collaborate with the Butler Opera Center and its talented young singers in such an innovative way as we build toward opening night of our main stage production of Pagliacci this fall.”

The Pagliacci Project will bring traditional opera to non-traditional settings: an East Side bar; a popular shopping district; and a UT football tailgate event for the “Texas Exes.” The project’s reach will extend beyond Austin with performances in Georgetown, Bee Cave and more. The Pagliacci Project strives to make a lasting connection with the greater Austin community, fostering an appreciation for opera and the arts, and allowing the Butler Opera Center and Austin Lyric Opera to engage new audiences in Central Texas with this vibrant art form. The project will also raise public awareness for ALO’s fully-staged production of Pagliacci, taking place at The Long Center for the Performing Arts in November of 2012. Dates for The Pagliacci Project are:

Additional performances—and a few surprise appearances—are being added all the time. For the most up-to-date performance schedule or to have The Pagliacci Project come to your location, contact Elizabeth Cooper, Education and Production Coordinator at 512.610.7683 or ecooper@austinlyricopera.org.

The unique combination of forces between a major university music program and an established opera company gives ALO the ability to extend its reach into the community in a way it would be unable to do through its main stage season alone. The Pagliacci Project also provides UT students with expanded performing experience and the opportunity to benefit from additional exposure to professional artists. “Austin Lyric Opera is delighted that this new partnership is underway, and that we are able to help cultivate the next generation of operatic talent,” says Richard Buckley, ALO’s Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. “It is our hope that this will be the cornerstone to a long lasting relationship with the Butler Opera Center.”

Seven UT students will earn college credit for their participation in The Pagliacci Project, led by a stage director who is a UT Master’s candidate. Musical leadership will be provided by ALO’s artistic staff, and the lead tenor role of Canio will be performed by Jason Baldwin, a gifted professional tenor and established artist who has performed leading roles at top opera houses throughout the United States.

The Pagliacci Project is made possible by the generous support of Sandra and Walter Wilkie, and The Arts Education League of Austin Lyric Opera. For more information, visit www.AustinLyricOpera.org.

Students, Parents and Teachers Enjoy Complimentary Tickets to Dress Rehearsal Performances

AUSTIN— Austin Lyric Opera’s (ALO) Opera by Night community engagement program offers 5,000 free tickets each year to students, parents and teachers to attend ALO dress rehearsals throughout the season. Teachers and parents interested in learning more about the Opera by Night Program may contact Elizabeth Cooper, Education and Production Coordinator at 512.610.7683 or ecooper@austinlyricopera.org. For more information, visit www.AustinLyricOpera.org/community.

Students grades 5-12 and accompanying adults are invited to participate in the Opera by Night program. Prior to each Opera by Night dress rehearsal, ALO distributes educational packets to teachers at participating schools. These packets contain a variety of information about the opera itself, as well as cultural and historical context which teachers can use in their curriculum in a variety of subjects, including music, history, art and literature. This enables students to familiarize themselves with opera and have a more meaningful and enjoyable experience during their visit to the theater.

“Listening to live opera as a kid played a big role in how I came to fall in love with the art form,” says Joseph Specter, General Director of Austin Lyric Opera. “There is something so special about the live experience that cannot be conveyed in a recording. This program gives students the chance to share in that experience.” Opera by Night is often the first opportunity for many participants to enjoy live opera.

The 2012-13 Opera by Night schedule is as follows:

Pagliacci (Leoncavallo)
Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 7:00 pm
Who’s laughing now? This famous play-within-a-play tells the heartbreaking story of betrayal and jealousy in an Italian theater troupe. Theater and reality collide in a dramatic climax of operatic proportions when Canio discovers his wife has eyes for another man.

The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart)
Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 7:00 pm
Something’s afoot in the palace of the Count! In this single “day of madness,” Mozart takes us on a laugh-out-loud ride filled with schemes, masquerades and mistaken identities. The infamous Figaro, his bride-to-be Susanna, and the Countess conspire to expose and embarrass the Count. This is comic opera at its best.

Faust (Gounod)
Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 7:00 pm
Would you strike a deal with the devil? Faust, an aging scholar, wants another chance at youth and love, and forges a pact with Méphistophélès to seduce the beautiful and innocent Marguerite. What follows is an epic struggle between good and evil.

All performances take place at The Long Center for the Performing Arts.

Attendance for the Opera by Night program has grown by 20% over the past two seasons and now reaches nearly 5,000 each year. Participation has been bolstered by affiliations with a growing list of schools and community organizations that includes, but is not limited to:

Texas School for the Deaf

Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired

East Austin Public Schools (AISD)

Round Rock ISD

American Youth Works

Project Hope of Manor ISD

Austin Shelter for Women and Children

Boys and Girls Clubs of Austin

Lifeworks

Leaders Enrichment Arts Program (LEAP)

Austin Lyric Opera is committed to empowering young people with innovative programs that expose students to the joys of classical music and live performance. Opera by Night makes opera an accessible art form in a welcoming, non-discriminatory environment. Opera by Night is made possible by the generous support of BlueCross BlueShield of Texas. For more information, visit www.AustinLyricOpera.org.

AUSTIN — Austin Lyric Opera (ALO) today announced the appointment of Joseph Specter as general director.

Specter, who was selected by the ALO Board of Directors after an extensive national search, is an experienced administrator who draws from a deep understanding of the arts and corporate environments. He will begin work with the Opera on April 16, 2012.

Specter comes to ALO from the Metropolitan Opera, where he has served as director of institutional relations since 2010. Prior to the Met, he was a senior client service associate at the investment firm Lord Abbett & Co., where he worked with institutional investors in the marketing and relationship management areas.

“We believe we have found an extraordinary talent and a wonderful person in Joe Specter,” Jo Anne Christian, chair of the board, said. “His skill and enthusiasm make him an ideal leader of ALO and a great asset to the Austin arts community.”

A former professional baritone, Specter earned an artist diploma from Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts, and is a graduate of the double-degree program between Tufts University and the New England Conservatory of Music. During his career as a singer, Specter performed more than 20 opera and musical theater roles with companies throughout the United States. In 2009, Specter founded Lucy’s Brother, a company that creates novel music publishing products, seeking to make opera accessible to a broader audience and to provide valuable tools to working singers and teachers. He named the company after Lucia’s brother Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor—the first opera he ever saw and the first leading role he sang in his career.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to join this wonderful company, which has played such a vital role in the arts in Austin for the past quarter century,” Specter said. “I greatly look forward to working with Maestro Buckley, the ALO staff, and the Board of Directors as the company begins this exciting new chapter.”

Specter will move to Austin with his wife Kate and two daughters, ages 4 years and 9 months.

“Joe Specter is the perfect person to lead ALO as we embark on our next 25 years,” Wendi Kushner, who headed the general director search committee, said. “His enthusiasm and passion for the art form is sure to resonate with Austin audiences.”

Richard Buckley, artistic director and principal conductor, said, “I am pleased to welcome Joe to the company and enthusiastically look forward to working with him. He and I share a passion for the art form and a commitment to take Austin Lyric Opera to new levels of artistic accomplishment and institutional strength.”

Kevin Smith, former president and chief executive officer of the Minnesota Opera, who came on board in July 2011 as Austin Lyric Opera’s interim general director, will continue his work as an advisor and consultant during the transition.

Now in its 25th Anniversary Season, Austin Lyric Opera was founded in 1986 by Joseph McClain and the late Dr. Walter Ducloux. Austin Lyric Opera, along with Ballet Austin and Austin Symphony Orchestra, is one of the founding resident companies of The Long Center, Austin’s creative home.

Austin Lyric Opera Announces Spin-Off, Effective Feb. 1

AUSTIN—The Austin Lyric Opera announced today that the Armstrong Community Music School will become an independent not-for-profit organization, effective February 1, 2012. This move is the result of a decision taken by the board of trustees of Austin Lyric Opera this past June to spin off the music school as a separate entity.

“This change allows the Austin Lyric Opera and the Armstrong School of Music to focus on their core missions and to expand their services to the community,” Ernest Auerbach, president of the Opera board, said. “We are pleased about what the future holds for both the Opera and the school.”

Martha Rochelle, who chaired the Austin Lyric Opera’s task force that worked on a strategic plan for the future of the school, will serve as Armstrong Community Music School’s chair.

The Austin Lyric Opera established the Armstrong Community Music School in 2000 at the same time it bought and renovated its facility on Barton Springs Road. “Owning that building has given us an extremely valuable asset, and creating a school that can stand alone makes us believe we’ve successfully raised a bright child into a productive and creative adult,” Auerbach said.

The opera and the school will maintain their programs and operations at the Barton Springs Road site through April 2012 and then will establish separate facilities.

The Austin Lyric Opera will launch a new opera education program to complement its opera subscription season at The Long Center. The Armstrong Community Music School will maintain its focus on early childhood music education, individual music instruction and other community programs.

The opera, now in its 25th season, recently announced its list of operas to be performed next season: Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Gounod’s Faust.

Auerbach said that recent donations to the Opera have totaled more than $1 million and that the sale of the building in December to Megalomedia Inc. was a profitable and stabilizing move. “The successful sale of our building, the support we are seeing for the Silver Anniversary Fund and other donations that are flowing in has brought us to the best financial condition we’ve had in many years,” Auerbach said. “The Opera is close to finding new space for its staff and rehearsals, and are seeing a bright future for this important performing arts company.”

Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, and Gounod’s Faust

AUSTIN—Austin Lyric Opera (ALO) announced today the lineup of its 26th season (2012-2013). The season kicks off in November 2012 with Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, followed by Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro in January and February 2013. The season concludes with a new production of Gounod’s Faust in April 2013. Current subscribers can renew their season tickets starting Tuesday, January 17.

Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Richard Buckley will lead all three productions. “We are tremendously proud and excited to announce the 26th season,” says Richard Buckley. “We selected three productions that allow us to explore repertoire and really showcase many world class artists on the stage.”

“There is a powerful sense of energy and optimism at ALO that is being felt throughout the community,” says Kevin Smith, interim general director. “Audiences have responded with enthusiasm to our current anniversary season—subscriptions and contributions are up substantially—and they will undoubtedly enjoy the 26th season with three recognizable and inspiring operas.”

Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci

November 10, 15 and 18, 2012

The 26th season opens in November with Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. This famously tragic opera tells the heartbreaking story of betrayal and jealousy in an Italian comedic theater troupe. When the wife of the lead performer has eyes for another actor, theater and reality collide in a dramatic climax of operatic proportions. The opera premiered in 1892 in Milan led by famed conductor Arturo Toscanini.

Renowned tenor Carl Tanner returns to Austin as Canio, a role he has performed to great acclaim at New York City Opera, Real Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Italy and the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia; soprano Danielle Pastin appears in a role debut as Nedda; and baritone Daniel Sutin as Tonio and baritone Corey McKern as Silvio make their ALO debuts.

This production of Pagliacci was design by the Italian Roberto Laganà. Stage direction is by Garnett Bruce, who has staged numerous productions with Austin Lyric Opera including La Traviata (2002, 2010), La Cenerentola (2008), La bohème (2009), and the upcoming Turandot (2012).

Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro

January 31, February 2 and 3, 2013

The season continues in January and February with Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. In this “single day of madness,” Figaro, the infamous barber of Seville, takes the audience on a laugh-out-loud ride filled with schemes, masquerades and mistaken identities.

Premiered in 1786, the opera was the first of three collaborations between Mozart and Da Ponte. It is a continuation of the plot of Beaumarchais’ play The Barber of Seville several years later.

Soprano Jamie-Rose Guarrine (The Magic Flute, 2011) returns to Austin as Susanna; bass Paolo Pecchioli (Italian Girl in Algiers, 2011) is Figaro; bass Jonathan Beyer (La bohème, 2009; Flight, 2011) is Count Almaviva; soprano Eleni Calenos makes her ALO debut as Countess Rosina Almaviva; and mezzo-soprano Karin Mushegain (Flight, 2011) is Cherubino.

This production, originally owned by the Opera Company of Philadelphia, is now in the hands of Austin Lyric Opera. Stage direction is by Kristine McIntyre, who previously directed Flight (2010) at ALO.

Gounod’s Faust

April 25, 27 and 28, 2013

The final production of the 26th season is Gounod’s Faust. This classic tale of a man’s deal with the devil in order to give himself another chance at youth and love is abounded with Gounod’s unforgettable melodies.

Tenor Jonathan Boyd makes his ALO debut in the title role Faust; bass-baritone Jamie Offenbach debuts for ALO as Mephistopheles; and Korean baritone Hyung Yun makes his ALO debut as Valentine.

The new production by stage director Bernard Uzan is a coproduction of Arizona Opera, Lyric Opera Baltimore and Opera Lyra Ottawa that premiered in Arizona in November 2011. The Arizona Republic called Bernard Uzan’s conception and direction a “triumph.”

“My purpose is not to shock people,” says Uzan. “Here I simply want to show that the quest for Faust doesn’t belong to a specific time; Méphistophélès belongs to no time. The story belongs to humanity. And the way we’re going to do it is to speak more to the preoccupations of today.”

New performance schedule for season 26

Starting in season 26, Austin Lyric Opera performances are scheduled on Thursday night (7:30 p.m.), Saturday night (7:30 p.m.); and Sunday matinee (3 p.m.). All performances take place at The Long Center for the Performing Arts.

Patrons can subscribe to a Thursday, Saturday or Sunday series that includes all three productions of the season. Subscriptions start at $50. As always, subscribers may make exchanges for a different performance day up to 48 hours prior to curtain.

Barton Springs Road Property Sold to Megalomedia for $5.45 million

Austin Lyric Opera has sold its building on Barton Springs Road to Megalomedia Inc. for $5.45 million. Jo Anne Christian, chair of the board of the Austin Lyric Opera, announced that the deal with the Austin-based film and production company closed on Dec. 30, 2011.

“The Opera board began exploring the possibility of selling the building earlier this year,” Christian said. “We are delighted at the price and terms of this sale and thrilled that the deal moved so quickly.”

According to Kevin Smith, interim general director of the Opera, the proceeds of the sale will be ample to lease excellent space for the company and to establish a solid financial foundation to support future opera seasons and opera education programs. “We will spend the first quarter of 2012 locating rehearsal and office space and expect to be settled into new quarters well before summer,” Smith said.

“The gift by the original generous donors to the building’s construction has kept on giving. That original investment has grown exponentially and will permit the Opera to establish a solid financial base for a bright and exciting artistic future,” Ernest Auerbach, board president, said.

Auerbach attributed the speed and efficiency of the sale to Elisabeth Waltz, a board trustee with extensive professional real estate experience, and to Commercial Texas, which represented the opera in the sale. “We are extraordinarily grateful for the invaluable assistance these professionals provided us,” Auerbach said.

The Armstrong Community Music School, which has been a part of the opera family, will become independent and is in discussion with possible merger partners. Auerbach said he expected to be able to give a progress report on those discussions within the next few weeks.

Now in its 25th Anniversary Season, Austin Lyric Opera was founded in 1986 by Joseph McClain and the late Dr. Walter Ducloux. Austin Lyric Opera, along with the Austin Ballet and Austin Symphony Orchestra, is one of the founding resident companies of The Long Center, Austin’s creative home, where productions continue to be performed.
